What Is BenZen?
BenZen is a media and technology company making insurance simpler to understand and easier to use.
The Story
My name is Ted McNeil, insurance broker and founder of BenZen Insurance.
I started this agency for two reasons: a handful of people told me I couldn’t do it — and a lot of individuals, families, and small businesses genuinely needed a guide.
Provider networks, drug formularies, prior authorizations, out-of-pocket maximums…these weren’t designed to be easily navigated.
That’s how it was for my family.
Mother of Invention
I’m not a dev or the smartest guy in the room, but I had a problem to solve and just enough faith to figure it out.
Taught myself automation, content management, SEO, CRM and SQL to build our entire stack. Not because it was fun, but because I couldn’t afford to hire a team to do it for me.
In this industry, evaluating a policy for a chronic condition like diabetes can mean digging through hundreds of pages of fine print. It forces agents and consumers to waste time, guess—or miss crucial details entirely.
So I built a tool instead—an engine that analyzes the data to make shopping for health benefits transparent, fast, and remarkably precise.

Why BenZen?
Understanding benefits was hard. I wanted to simplify it.
Benefits. Easy.
And it’s personal. I spent years navigating the healthcare system trying to help my dad and little brother battle Type-2 diabetes.
When the stakes were at their highest and there was no one to guide us.
After losing them, I realized something critical: people aren’t just looking for insurance plans or policies. They want someone in their corner who actually gives a damn — and protection when it matters most.
The most affordable plan isn’t always the right plan—especially when you’re managing diabetes.
Buried inside every plan is detailed cost-sharing data for chronic conditions like diabetes. Most agents don’t know where to find it—or don’t have the time to look. Our tool does it for them.
The Blueprint
BenZen was built completely from scratch — no inherited book of business, no purchased leads, and no corporate budget.
The outcome? A high-efficiency system where data is the asset: consistent organic traffic, an expanding content library, and market intelligence that compounds daily.
The Infrastructure:
- Inbound Engine: High-intent organic search traffic driven by educational content delivering qualified leads with zero paid advertising.
- Central Intelligence: A proprietary PostgreSQL database linking raw CMS datasets, market research, plan summaries, and formularies into one searchable engine.
- The Concierge: Our custom-built AI assistant Benny—a copilot trained to analyze health profiles, map GLP-1 and diabetes formulary tiers, and deliver personalized plan recommendations.
- The Brain (HubSpot CRM): Seamless intake, qualification, routing, automated nurture, and client support operating inside a single system.
- Strategic Layer (Gemini + Claude): Powering operations, deep content development, competitive analysis, and strategic decision-making.
- Community Layer: Tools, resources, and a network built for the people navigating the system—and the professionals helping them do it.
Just one guy with a vision, doing my part.
What’s Next?
This is an ongoing story. Not a finished one.
What started as a personal mission is becoming something bigger—a subject matter expert and media authority on health benefits, built for people navigating a system that wasn’t designed for them.
The content library is the foundation: in-depth articles, a searchable knowledge base, original research, and short-form video—all designed to close the gap between everyday consumers and a complex industry.
Sitting on top is an intelligence layer—our engine fine-tuned to translate raw plan data into clear recommendations for both consumers navigating the exchange and the agents serving them.
I’ll share everything along the way. The wins, the losses, the real lessons. Follow along on social. The best is yet to come.
