Health Reimbursement Account (HRA)
Small employers who choose not to offer group health coverage to their employees can assist them in paying for medical insurance through a Health Reimbursement Account, also known as a Health Reimbursement Arrangement or simply HRA.
HRAs are similar to employee health savings accounts, where you can make contributions and employees can use the funds for qualified medical expenses.
The contributions and reimbursements under HRAs are both tax-free.
The two main HRAs:
- QSEHRA: Budget-friendly option for businesses under 50 employees with no group plan. Contributions have IRS limits. Employees need individual health insurance or Medicare.
- ICHRA: More flexible option for businesses of any size, even with a group plan. No contribution limits, but more administrative work. Employees need individual health insurance or Medicare.
